Andy in the race to save a young boys life

Andy Priaulx is used to racing, but now he is involved in a different kind of race, the race to save a 6 year old boy called Afonso. Fellow racing driver Andre Couto, has contacted Andy because his son is in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant and as yet the global bone marrow registry, which has over 12 million people registered, does not hold a compatible donor for little Afonso. Andy and Afonso’s father are usually rivals on the track when they compete against each other in Macau at the end of the racing season. However, when Andy received the message from Andre his first thoughts were how he, a father of two, would feel in the same position and what he could do to help.

Andy and his charity team have organised a special drop-in clinic enabling men and women aged between 18 and 40 to join The Anthony Nolan Trust Bone Marrow Register. This clinic will be run by Karen Archer and her team of volunteers from both the UK and Guernsey and will take place next week on Thursday 11th March at Kings Life between midday and 6pm.

Registration is easy and will only take a few minutes of your time, you only need to answer a few questions and give a saliva sample, what could be simpler? As well as joining the registry himself Andy will be in attendance over the lunchtime period, so this is an ideal opportunity to come and meet one of Guernsey’s sporting champions whilst putting yourself forward as a potential bone marrow donor.

Andy has also teamed up with Specsavers Optical Group who have kindly agreed to hold a bone marrow clinic for staff on Friday 12th March at their headquarters in St Andrews. If any other local businesses wish to take part please contact Andy Priaulx Racing, details below.

The Anthony Nolan Trust alone receives over 16,000 patient search requests each year from transplant centres worldwide. By joining the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Register, you will extend their ability to help save the lives of thousands of people just like little Afonso who without your help have little or no chance of survival.
