“TO BE PART OF THE BMW MOTORSPORT FAMILY AND TO STRIVE FOR DTM SUCCESS TOGETHER IS SIMPLY FANTASTIC.” Stefan Reinhold – Team Principal BMW Team RMG
In 2012 the team lined up as the newcomer in BMW’s return to the DTM. The individual know-how and precise application of each individual’s particular skills were one of the team’s biggest strengths. The result was three podiums courtesy of Martin Tomczyk.
“The crew comes from all areas of professional motor racing,” Reinhold explains. “From GT racing and the World Rally Championship to DTM and Formula One. Almost all the team members have experience gained in several fields of motorsport. Our greatest asset is definitely the people in our team.” Reinhold himself has Formula One and GT racing experience to his name and had been toying with the idea of launching his own racing team for a long time. When BMW announced its return to DTM this idea took shape and work began on the conception. The team has moved into headquarters in Niederzissen, Germany.
Martin Tomczyk claimed the team’s first podium in only the fourth race in Spielberg. This was followed by a further two podiums at the Norisring and Nürburgring.
For 2013 the team will build on this experience and be very strong in the build up to winning races and assisting BMW Motorsport in the quest to retain the DTM Manufacturers title.
Having completed a sensational return to the DTM last season, which culminated in the winning of all three titles, BMW Motorsport will continue in DTM with a four team eight driver package.
As well as lining up in the DTM, BMW also continues its involvement in the American Le Mans Series with the BMW Z4 GTE in 2013, and is on a mission to regain the GT drivers’ team and manufacturers’ titles it won in 2011. The team charged with repeating this feat is BMW Team RLL. In Europe, BMW is strengthening its presence in Customer Racing with the BMW Z4 GTE.
After numerous triumphs last season, the car has been developed for 2013 and, in the hands of private BMW teams and drivers, looks set to cause a stir at events and championships held in accordance with the GT regulations. The BMW Z4 GTE will also be run by private and factory-supported BMW teams at 24-hour classics like the marathon at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife in 2013.
“I have a lot of aims for 2013, which will be my 11th year with BMW. Without doubt my main one is to get back to my winning ways. I am confident my end of year performance showed I can still be a major challenger for wins, and so using all the experience I gained last year as a DTM rookie will be invaluable. I know the car well and I also now all the circuits, so I feel there is nothing that can stop me. It will be so different to when we all arrived in Hockenheim 12 months ago as the newcomers. BMW has proved just how competitive it can be in any racing environment and I am proud to be part of that family. While I shall not be with BMW Team RBM, there will not be many changes for me as all the BMW teams work as one. I can’t wait to get in my Crowne Plaza Hotels BMW M3 DTM and start racing again.”
