This season Turkey’s Kaan Onder will be racing in the European Touring Car Championship in a BMW 320si entered by the Borusan Otomotiv Motorsport team and has his sights firmly set on reaching the very top of his chosen career. To help him achieve his goal he will be mentored by triple world touring car champion Andy Priaulx.
“When I met Kaan I recognised the same sort of passion for the sport that I had at his age. Motorsport has been my life for many years, so I was delighted when he asked if I would help guide him as he sets out on a path that can be tricky at times. I still have the burning desire to do well in the sport and, as a professional driver, I hope to guide him through some of the pitfalls,” said Priaulx, who has been a BMW works driver for over a decade and is currently competing for the German manufacturer in America in the UNITED SportsCar Championship.
Onder is only 17-years-old and started his racing career in karts before moving into single seaters in Formula BMW. Commenting on the chance to gain first hand advice from one of the most successful touring car drivers, Onder said: “The opportunity to have advice from someone who has such a knowledge of the sport both present and past and is still competing at the very highest level is a dream for me. I want to emulate Andy by moving from the ETCC to the World Touring Car Championship. I can think of no better way to start with such an experienced driver’s knowledge and in such a fantastic car.”
Priaulx has a great belief in the right mental approach to the sport, and has seen Onder has this as well as a natural ability: “He has been to the iZone Driver Performance centre where John Pratt has been working with him and has been very impressed with his attitude to the task ahead of him.”
